The safety of our patients and staff has always been and remains our top priority.

As the world continues to navigate the challenges presented by COVID-19, we realize that some people may have questions about coming to the hospital even as they seek to address pressing health issues. Please note that we have implemented extraordinary measures and additional protocols to help ensure a safe and clean environment for our patients, physicians, staff and community. We are actively monitoring and responding to all recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and our local Health Authority.

Emergency Department – Do Not Delay in Seeking Critical Care

Our Emergency Departments are staffed 24/7 to serve those with emergency medical conditions. Individuals experiencing serious injuries or medical symptoms such as chest pain, numbness, difficulty breathing or mental confusion should call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency department. It could save your life.

We have an additional layer of protection with the utilization of UV light technology that kills germs once a room is unoccupied. Curtains and doors are kept closed and patients are separated based on symptoms.

Individuals Experiencing COVID-19 Symptoms

If you develop a fever or cough or have difficulty breathing, or have had close contact with someone who has had a confirmed positive COVID-19 test result, please seek medical attention by calling your provider’s office or an Urgent Care Center.

Hospital Services and Programs

The system is fully operational. We are monitoring for symptoms in patients and implementing isolation protocols, if needed.

Most community health education programs offered by the hospital in the near term have been canceled or postponed; please follow the system on Facebook for updates.


For your convenience and safety, virtual visits via Telehealth technology are available to address many non-emergency health concerns. Virtual visits allow you to speak with a healthcare provider using a phone, tablet or computer from the comfort of your own home.

Elective Procedures

Due to the increase in COVID-19 positive cases in the Rio Grande Valley, your physician or surgeon may recommend postponing your surgery or elective procedure. If you are scheduled for a surgical or elective procedure, please contact your physician or surgeon to discuss the best options for you.

LIMITED VISITATION – Be an Advocate for Your Loved One’s Care

Consistent with city and county efforts around “social distancing,” to limit the exposure to individuals who may have contracted COVID-19 but are at that time asymptomatic, we have revised our Visitation Policies to help protect our patients and their loved ones.

  • At this time, we have suspended visitation for the health and safety of everyone in our care. Visitors are not permitted in the hospitals, including the ED (with limited critical exceptions).
  • For planned and unplanned inpatient admissions, visitors are not allowed to enter any areas of the hospitals with the exceptions noted below.
    • For certain compassionate care/end-of-life situations that the attending/consulting physician approves and we can reasonably accommodate
    • Labor and Delivery patients are limited to 1 support person who may also stay overnight
    • Post-partum patients are limited to 1 support person who may also stay overnight
    • NICU infants are limited to 1 support person who may also stay overnight
    • Pediatric patients are limited to 1 support person who may also stay overnight

**For OB patients, families who cannot secure child care for their other children will be asked to contact the hospital before picking up newborns or the mothers because children are not permitted in any patient care area.

  • For outpatient procedures including surgery, radiology, lab and other visits, no visitors are permitted in the waiting areas or within the hospital building.
    • Loved ones and friends accompanying the patient are asked to remain in their cars or be available by cell phone so that we can call them to pick up the patient at discharge.
  • Visitors are subject to screening upon arrival at the hospital. Any individual who has been in contact with someone with fever, cough or influenza-like symptoms within the last 48 hours will be prohibited from entering.
  • Travel history will be queried; those who have traveled to an affected country as currently identified on the CDC Travel Health Notices list will not be permitted to proceed within the hospital.

Our revised visitation policy means that family members or loved ones will drop off the patient at the front entrance to the hospital unless their physician directs that they enter through the ER. Our staff will guide the patient through the admission process. Throughout the patient’s hospital stay we will keep the patient-designated family members and loved ones informed of the patient’s progress and we will call the patient’s designated contact at the time of discharge to take the patient home.

Of course, we fully support the use of FaceTime, cell phones and other means of communication between the patient and their family/loved ones throughout the patient’s stay with us.

We know this policy on visitation seems limiting and, honestly, it is because it is for your safety. These are very different times than we have all faced before. Again, our patients’ safety is a top concern of ours and this policy on limited visitation is being implemented to protect you during the time of the COVID-19 crisis.


The CDC recommends individuals and families follow everyday preventive measures including:

  • Social distancing – avoiding crowds and crowded spaces, avoiding handshaking and hugging, deliberately staying at least six feet away from other people, and replacing in-person visits with remote check-ins using technology.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then dispose of the tissue.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with 60–95% alcohol.
  • Routinely clean frequently touched surfaces and objects.
  • Stay home and away from others when you are sick with any respiratory disease symptoms.
