South Texas Health System Children's has the only pediatric ED in the Rio Grande Valley that provides specialized emergency care just for kids. Our specially trained staff of pediatric emergency personnel work quickly and efficiently to care for your child.
Request a Time in the ER
ER Reserve lets you request a time (up to 12 hours in advance) in our Emergency Department for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses that require prompt care.
What to Expect When Arriving for Care
Sudden illness or injury can occur without warning, and while no one typically plans a trip to the ER, everyone should know what to expect after they arrive.
Specialized Care for Trauma, Injuries and Major Illness
Pediatric emergency physicians and nurses are sensitive to the needs of kids and take a different approach to care. They are trained to put kids at ease so they can be more receptive to procedures and treatment, such as pain management. Pediatric emergency specialists also know how to use medical tools and equipment that’s adjusted to fit kids.
Nominate a Hometown Hero
If you would like to recognize a first responder for their outstanding service, then nominate them for the STHS Hometown Heroes Award. This could be a Paramedic, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), member of Law Enforcement, Firefighter or other lifesaving personnel.
The emergency staff at South Texas Health System Children's treat children for a wide range of medical conditions and injuries, including:
- Asthma and difficulty breathing
- Complications from chronic or congenital illnesses
- Cuts, burns or broken bones
- Head injuries
- High and persistent fever
- Severe infections or allergic reactions
Helicopter Landing Pad for Air Support
South Texas Health System Children's is also equipped with a helicopter landing pad for air support. Helipads allow air ambulances and MEDEVACs to transfer patients to trauma units and receive patients from remote areas without local hospitals. Air ambulances are useful when a patient needs to be relocated to a different hospital in a short time period, rather than driving the patient.
